The serpentine form of a Japanese dragon is depicted on the reverse, with an orb in grip.

According to Japanese mythology, the orb, called a tamashi, is the vessel for the dragon's supernatural powers. The image is encircled by a stylized border containing the inscriptions "THE EAST INDIA COMPANY" and TRADE DOLLAR.
